Word of Encouragement – 9/13/17

Where were you? What were you doing when the horrendous news hit us on Sept. 11, 2001?

It hardly seems possible that 16 years have passed, since that dastardly deed that was committed in New York City Sept. 11, 2001. Almost 3,000 people, who had awakened to a crystal clear, beautiful day had made their way off to work or to other routine activities of the day never imagining that it would be their last.

The following was taken from my Uncle Jack Bloxom’s bulletin when he was pastor of Central Baptist Church, Conway, Ark in the 1960s and 1970s. I published it in my church bulletin at College Heights Baptist Church, Nacogdoches exactly 35 years ago this week. (exactly one-half of my lifetime ago) Please allow your mind and heart process these thoughts:

We are looking forward to the revival services, Oct. 1-4. Bro. Grady Cashion will be with us beginning Sunday morning, Oct. 1@ 10:45AM and Bro. Steve Colburn will begin his ministry with us on Sunday night.  Please lift these men up in prayer as they come and minister to us.

I was absolutely overjoyed Sunday at the big increase in Sunday School attendance. Here’s the way it looked Sunday morning.

What’s your hurry?

One of my favorite Andy Griffith episodes is the one where the visiting minister preaches a sermon titled, “What’s Your Hurry?” If it was one sermon the sleepy little hamlet of Mayberry didn’t need, it was the admonition to relax. The minister’s long, drawn-out oratory on the subject made it almost impossible for Barney and Gomer to remain awake.

Did you ever wish you could push a reset button, or “control-alternate-delete” your life and begin again — knowing what you know now?

We know such a thought, or wish is not realistic, and furthermore, it has occurred to me just how empty such a life would be.

The things you know today, you learned through difficulties and trials — things you would not have learned any other way.

The playground equipment has been installed! In order to make the playground safer for the children, we are taking donations to put a soft ground covering underneath the equipment. Wood chips, pea gravel, etc. If anyone would like to volunteer to head up this project, please contact Kathy Hartley.

To understand how God works to accomplish His will, one should have an understanding of the word “paradox.”

A paradox is a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality, expresses a truth. It is paradoxical to think about someone who is virtually devoid of human ingenuity or skills, or even hope, yet becoming a master craftsman, or world renowned educator, military leader, or corporate giant.

Please allow me to expand on comments made Sunday about the urgency for preaching that warns of impending doom for those outside of Christ.

Paul told Timothy that “…the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;” 2 Timothy 4:3.

I am afraid that in these last days, we have been guilty of watering down the gospel, majoring on “felt needs” sermons, talks about

God commands you to rest!

Don’t you just love the thought of rest? We relish our bedtime after a grueling day — or a quick, afternoon power nap. God has designed these human bodies with a need to rest. He also modeled rest to us when He finished with the six days of creation. He rested on the seventh day — not that He needed it because God never tires — but it served as a picture for us.
