Word of Encouragement – 10/4/17

I was touched and blessed by each message Bro. Grady has preached to us this week. I was particularly touched by his message, “Out on a Limb” Sunday night. His reference was Joshua 3 where God commanded Joshua and the people to get ready to cross the Jordan River with the Ark of the Covenant. Humanly speaking, it was “risky” – because the waters normally, were treacherous, but God promised to stand the waters still while they crossed over. The command God gave to Joshua was, “As I was with Moses, so shall I be with you.”

We welcome Mr. and Mrs. Wallace (June) Emmert into our fellowship. Wallace is a long time school friend from my days in Ennis, and I look forward to fellowshipping with them. The Lord has sent some wonderful people to our church recently, and it gives me great encouragement concerning what I know He has for FBC in the days to come.

Allow me to follow up on the item I discussed in Sunday’s message about the “clear and present danger” of a church losing the flicker of her candlestick. To many readers, the language may seem a bit abstract — some even think it’s allegorical. But the seven churches in Asia Minor were actual churches. And the spiritual disaster at least five of them were experiencing were also very true to life, and any church in the world today can suffer the loss of their candlestick.

Where were you? What were you doing when the horrendous news hit us on Sept. 11, 2001?

It hardly seems possible that 16 years have passed, since that dastardly deed that was committed in New York City Sept. 11, 2001. Almost 3,000 people, who had awakened to a crystal clear, beautiful day had made their way off to work or to other routine activities of the day never imagining that it would be their last.

I published it in my church bulletin at College Heights Baptist Church, Nacogdoches exactly 35 years ago this week. (exactly one-half of my lifetime ago) Please allow your mind and heart process these thoughts:

What’s your hurry?

One of my favorite Andy Griffith episodes is the one where the visiting minister preaches a sermon titled, “What’s Your Hurry?” If it was one sermon the sleepy little hamlet of Mayberry didn’t need, it was the admonition to relax. The minister’s long, drawn-out oratory on the subject made it almost impossible for Barney and Gomer to remain awake.

Did you ever wish you could push a reset button, or “control-alternate-delete” your life and begin again — knowing what you know now?

We know such a thought, or wish is not realistic, and furthermore, it has occurred to me just how empty such a life would be.

The things you know today, you learned through difficulties and trials — things you would not have learned any other way.

Playground!

The playground equipment has been installed! In order to make the playground safer for the children, we are taking donations to put a soft ground covering underneath the equipment. Wood chips, pea gravel, etc. If anyone would like to volunteer to head up this project, please contact Kathy Hartley.
